The English Riviera offers some of the most picturesque
and dramatic scenery in the country. With its temperate climate and glorious
beaches the area has always
been a magnet for sun lovers and tourists looking for a warm welcome and relaxing surroundings. Covering
approximately 22 miles of coastline, cliffs, coves and beaches there are many stunning walks as well as some
fantastic scenery to be encountered all across the Bay. ODDICOMBE
BEACH is the nearest sandy beach to our cottage St Anns. The beach
is accessible down a very steep road. The small car park at the bottom
is a welcome relief to drivers. The wooded
coastal path down from "Walls Hill" is a much easier option.
There is also a cliff railway available, which was opened in 1926 and carries
40 passengers. Oddicombe is a designated euro beach and has held a blue
flag for 14 consecutive years. There is a beach shop with toilets and
baby changing facilities as well as a restaurant/cafe. You can also hire
deck-chairs, sun-beds, pedalos, boats and windsurfing equipment. It is
also a very popular place for divers and fisherman off the quay. Dogs
are only allowed on this beach after the season has finished at the end of
September.
BABBACOMBE
BEACH is the adjacent
beach to Oddicombe. It is a small, sheltered sand and shingle beach,
which is popular for sailing and fishing off the breakwater. Full facilities are available including a
toilet, pub and parking all within a few yards of the beach. The beach
is also popular for water sports and diving. Dogs are allowed on
this beach all year round.
ANSTEY'S
COVE (¼ mile)
is the nearest beach to our holiday
cottage, Rosalia. It is an
enchanting, sheltered, shingle and rock beach, which was once a smuggler's
haven. It was known as Agatha Christie's Inspirational Beach, as she
often took moonlight picnics here with her friends. The cove holds a
blue flag and seaside award.
There is a resident seal who swims in the waters around the cove and it has
been suggested by locals that dolphins can also be seen in the summer months.
TORRE
ABBEY SANDS (1
½ miles) is
the nearest large beach with full facilities, including qualified beach
attendants during the summer. There are abundant rock
pools and the beach is backed by a promenade and path with nearby parks and
gardens. There are toilets with disabled facilities, a
first aid post, lost child centre, café, restaurants and pubs. In
addition to swimming other activities include pedalos, floats and parascending.
The beach is by the South West Coast path and the Agatha Christie Mile. The car park has spaces for
1000 cars, including disabled spaces.
MEADFOOT
BEACH
(½ mile) is the
nearest sandy beach to our cottage Rosalia. It is predominantly sandy
with pebbles in places and is easily accessible. It is an ideal family beach and has gained both blue flag and
seaside award status and in addition to the usual facilities also has baby
changing. You can hire deckchairs, sunbeds and chalets. There is also a beach shop and cafe.
