TORQUAY - is a coastal town located in the Torbay area of South Devon.
In former years Torquay was a fishing town but during the 19th century it began to develop as a popular seaside resort. This combined
with the arrival of the railway lead to a rapid development in this direction, as well as in the overall population of the town which grew
dramatically during this period.
Amongst other things Torquay is famous for being the home of Agatha Christie, who was born there in 1890, the well-known author of numerous
crime novels. One of the tourist attractions of the town is "Agatha Christie's Mile", which is a tour of various locations related to the
author, each with a unique plaque. The locations include the Agatha Christie Gallery within the Torquay Museum, followed by the Grand Hotel where she
and her 1st husband Archie spent their honeymoon.
There are several fine family beaches in the town. Meadfoot beach is the nearest to our cottage Rosalia
in Wellswood. The beach is shingle and sand and amenities include canoeing, paddle boats, cafe/restaurant, beach huts, deck chair/pedalo hire, first
aid etc. Or Oddicombe Beach is the nearest beach to our other cottage St Anns, in St Marychurch/
Babbacombe. This is a beautiful area and is only 5 minutes walk from the cottage. On arriving at Babbacomnbe Downs, which is a pretty cliff top lawned
area with sparkling lights which line the road of hotels overlooking the sea. From the cliff top guests can marvel at the wonderful view of the beach
and sea below. Access to the beach is either via the cliff railway or down the steep slope/pathway. The beach itself is sheltered, nestling beneath
the red sandstone cliffs. It has been awarded the blue flag and facilities include toilets, beach shower, deck chair and boat hire, beach huts, cafe, safety
patrol boat.
